Artwork 2Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is the second game in the Crash Bandicoot series, and the sequel to the original game. The gameplay is largely similar to that of the original, as players make their way through a limited environment whilst breaking crates that contains bonuses. The goal of the game is to gather 25 crystals for Crash's nemesis, Doctor Neo Cortex. The crystals are scattered between 25 different levels accessible via Warp Rooms, which are hub areas of the game. A level is cleared by collecting its respective crystal and reaching the end of its path, which returns Crash to the Warp Room.
Development cost $2 million over 13 months from October 1996 — a directly reported figure, not an estimate. On the sales side the reported number is units SHIPPED to retailers (4.08 million worldwide by February 1999), which is not the same as units sold to players: the NPD Group put North American sell-through at 1.49 million. Earlier regional milestones, by late February 1998: 1 million units in the United States, 800,000 in Japan, 340,000 in Europe. NPD ranked it the ninth best-selling video game of 1998. Estimated gross ~$204M (4.08M x ~$49.99, the typical PlayStation launch price of the period — the game predates Steam so no SteamDB price history exists). That estimate is doubly soft: it prices shipped units rather than sold ones, and excludes discounts, returns, Greatest Hits budget re-releases and the retail margin. Not an official figure.
